What is MBSR?

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is one of the most rigorously researched psychological interventions in the world. Developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, it has been tested in hundreds of clinical trials across stress, chronic pain, anxiety, depression relapse, and burnout — with consistently strong outcomes.

This isn't a relaxation class or a meditation app. MBSR is structured, skills-based work that changes how you respond to difficulty — not just how you feel about it in the moment. By the end of 8 weeks, most participants report not just feeling better — but responding differently, automatically, in the moments that used to derail them.

Programme structure

  1. Weeks 1–2: Automatic pilot — Learning to notice where your attention actually is, versus where you think it is.

  2. Weeks 3–4: Dealing with barriers — Working with the mind's resistance, restlessness, and doubt.

  3. Weeks 5–6: Stress reactivity — Understanding your personal stress response and how to interrupt it before it takes over.

  4. Week 7: Taking care of yourself — Integrating mindful communication and self-compassion practices.

  5. Week 8 + day retreat — Consolidation, sustained practice, and planning for life after the programme.

What the research shows

  • Significant reductions in perceived stress and trait anxiety, maintained at 12-month follow-up.

  • NICE-recommended as a first-line treatment for recurrent depression, comparable in effectiveness to antidepressants.

  • Reduces pain catastrophising and the suffering around chronic pain, even when the pain itself doesn't fully resolve.

  • Sustained improvements in emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and personal efficacy in high-stress professions.
